Feathers of the Hawk Chapter 9

Enjoy the cliffhanger, and look at it positively: I have finished writing chapter 10, I only have to upload it now... And the parts where I used the Present Simple are not mistakes.

Even now, years later, as Kahu is reflecting what had happened that afternoon, she can't remember it clearly. The kiss, though it hadn't been her first, had erased all the memories. From Eyolf and Niall she had heard what had happened, but her own memories are just flashes. She knows that she walked to the gates.  That she had said that her name was Selene Skye. That she had to see her brother. The guards, who had let her in after a little while, had blurry faces in Kahu's memory. Niall had been very surprised to see her, of course. After all, Kahu had sworn never to pass his threshold again. Not after the things that had happened two years before. His smug smile, when his surprise had faded. Eyolf had been called in. A long discussion with Niall about dresses and whether Kahu would or wouldn't wear one. They had decided that Kahu would not wear dresses all day – Niall's idea – but that she would wear a dress at dinner, instead of wearing trousers all day – Kahu's idea. The agreement makes her, after all these years, smile. Niall had not been able to make her wear a dress. Kahu also knows that she went to her old rooms, and that she had pointed Eyolf to a room close to her own. That she had entered her own room, but had been too restless to stay there. That she had gone to the stables, to see her horse, hoping that it would calm her down.
After entering the stables, everything is clear in Kahu's memory. She had been with her horse for a while, grooming it, and she had sent the stable boys away, when someone entered. Kahu didn't look up – her nose had already told her who it was.
"Seven hells, Kahu! Why did you do that?" His tone was a bit angry.
Kahu knew that it had to happen, of course, but she had hoped for a little longer. She turned to see Eyolf's face. Smiling. Something snapped, but before she could do something, Eyolf had crossed the distance between them and grabbed her arms. He kissed her, harder than she had dared. Kahu couldn't help herself. Her anger floated away. When she finally pulled back, Eyolf let her go. His eyes asked her what was wrong.
"Well, when you sound angry and then start kissing me, it's contradicting. And besides, I have to breathe." Kahu laughed at Eyolf's confused face. Eyolf couldn't help himself and started laughing too.
"I'm sorry. I just had to do that."
"It's okay. At least, it will be. After you've kissed me again."
Eyolf did as Kahu had ordered.
"Are will be very pleased when he hears," Kahu said.
"You think so?"
"I know so." Kahu kissed him. "He wants more shapeshifters, and he seems to think that I will be one of the mothers."
"And? Are you going to be the mother of a child?"
"Who knows, wolf boy." They laughed, blissfully unaware of the things that would happen soon enough…
